About Iyengar Yoga
B.K.S. Iyengar was one of the most influential yoga teachers of the twentieth century. Through more than seven decades of practice, teaching, and writing, he helped bring yoga to students around the world and shaped the way asana and pranayama are studied and taught today.
His approach emphasized precision, sustained attention, and the intelligent use of props such as blankets, belts, blocks, bolsters, and chairs. These tools made it possible for students with different bodies, abilities, and levels of experience to explore the actions of the poses with greater clarity and support.
Iyengar’s books, including Light on Yoga, Light on Pranayama, and Light on Life, became important resources for generations of practitioners. His teaching also contributed to the development of therapeutic applications of yoga and to a deeper understanding of how practice can be adapted to meet individual needs.
B.K.S. Iyengar studied with T. Krishnamacharya and went on to establish the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, India. The institute remains an international center for the study of Iyengar Yoga, where his family and senior teachers continue the work he began.
Iyengar practiced and taught throughout his life and remained closely involved with the institute until shortly before his death in 2014 at the age of 95. His influence also extended beyond yoga practice itself through educational, health, and community initiatives in his ancestral village of Bellur, India.
Today, Iyengar Yoga is practiced and taught around the world by students and teachers who continue to explore its emphasis on precision, awareness, adaptability, and sustained practice.
