Collaborative Scholarship Program for study in New England

How it works

IYANE is partnering with New England CIYT’s and Studios to encourage students with financial need to begin or continue their practice by granting scholarships for single classes, class passes, series and workshops. Seventy-five percent (75%) of each scholarship comes from IYANE’s Patricia Walden Scholarship Fund, and twenty-five percent (25%) comes from the Studio or CIYT with whom the student will study. Initial awards will be capped at an IYANE contribution of $200. Students may continue to apply for scholarships once the initial award has been used, up to a limit of an IYANE contribution of $700 in a 12-month period. All scholarships will include IYANE membership if the applicant isn’t already a member and isn’t able to pay for their membership. In this case, the Studio/Teacher contribution will be based on the amount IYANE awards for the classes or workshop, while IYANE covers the membership fee. We ask applicants to inform their teacher/studio that they plan to apply for a scholarship.

Amounts to be awarded depend on the number of applications received, the cost of the intended program, the applicant’s financial resources and the scholarship budget authorized by the IYANE board. In making application, we ask applicants to consider their financial needs in light of the yamas and niyamas as set forth in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, in particular satya (truthfulness) and aparigraha (non-grasping/taking only what one needs).

Scholarship recipients have the option to remain anonymous to all but IYANE decision-makers and Studios and Teachers granting and receiving funds on their behalf. However, IYANE encourages, but does not require, scholarship recipients to write about their experiences for our blog or newsletter.
